The /var/hda/files/Downloads should be owned by you, not apache. That might be part of the problem. All shares are typically owned by the user.When I do a chmod it says it did not change anything to the symbolic link and the referent. I tried it with:
chmod -Rv 0777 /var/hda/files/Downloads
Edit: /var/hda/files/Downloads is owned by apache, while /mnt/samba/Downloads is owned by my main user muppets4

I've given up on this. It frustrates me too much. I am now the owner of both the mnt/samba and the var/hda/files/ folders. SAB crashes, files stick in the midst of downloading etc. I've put the folders back to /var/hda/files/Downloads. The HDD space is limited, but at least it is downloading.
