Question? can Plex be installed without using the one click app?

Plex is an app that continually sends out updates, which can not be applied to Amahi running Plex. If Plex were installed independent of the one click app would it be able to use the updates. I have been using Amahi for years but an currently considering taking it down and installing Plex server. Looking for options?
