SOLVED: Plex App Problem

Postby Bureaucromancer » Wed May 22, 2013 10:21 pm

I've installed the one click Plex App on Ubuntu 12.04, but the Plex server itself refuses to start. I'm not getting any errors, just nothing loading at the web interface, a stopped Plex server and nothing happening in response to manual attempts to start the server. I've uninstalled and reinstalled the app with no change.

Any thoughts at all or should I just take a shot at installing Plex manually? I really have no idea where to start untangling what the scripting might have screwed up...

Check the app install log for errors. It's located in /var/log directory.

Installing the app should not "screw up anything" as you stated. It may be that the package did not download and install properly. The app script adds files, but does not alter your existing OS infrastructure. It's a 60MB download and if you do not have a high speed connection it may not complete.

This app has been tested numerous times, so we know it works. What we don't know is if your connection is causing issues or the download source is a problem in your area.

By screwed up I really just mean that I don't know where to begin fixing whatever's gone wrong; if I'm on my own with it I'd be a lot more comfortable starting from scratch with a normal installation than trying to fix the one click.

The log from the most recent installation is below:

Code: Select all

======= app install begin @ Thu May 23 01:19:05 -0400 2013 ========== Installing app id y47iytek0u under /var/hda/platform/html ENV=production Your HDA services have been restarted. Your HDA services have been restarted. Downloading deb package... 64-bit NOTE: file /tmp/amahi-download-cache/046294742dd648e61f1d18e19cd435bd4f0ee955 picked up from cache. Installing deb package... Errors were encountered while processing: plexmediaserver App: Plex Media Server installed
From a quick look the Avahi packages that it's asking for seem to be an implementation of Bonjour, which I'm not terribly surprised to hear is needed. That said, I have absolutely no idea how to set it up, so if anybody has experience with this thing I'd love to have some guidance. If not I guess I'll just try installing the packages and reinstall Plex again...

That said, I though one click was supposed to handle dependencies.

PS: just tried to update the system before I start messing around with it, and apt-get upgrade threw the same error, that plexmediaserver need avahi-daemon and avahi utils.

Ok, obviously the install failed due to the dependencies. I just checked and both are installed by default with the OS or Amahi. Since they are installed by default, we don't check for them on app install. Really no need to check for something that is already there. So if they are missing on your system, then they were removed.

I would recommend you uninstall the app, install both dependencies, then try reinstall. I have checked numerous times for this app to install successfully on a fresh Amahi install and it works every time.

Not sure how those dependencies were removed, but putting them back should fix things.

Ok, things seem to have gotten worse now.

Uninstalled Plex, installed the missing packages and resinstalled it.

No change. Server not running, nothing at the URL provided.

Additionally I've now got plexms, plexms1 and plexms2 showing in web apps, but only plexms2 appearing as an installed app.

I kind of want to know what's going on here, but am seriously tempted to start over since I haven't transferred any data to the server yet.

The second install looks good. Uninstall Plex then check installed apps in the dashboard to ensure Plex is uninstalled.

Next check /var/hda/web-apps directory and remove any Plex folders.

Once you are sure they are all uninstalled, install Plex again. If all goes well you should see a clean install in the log. Now try the app.

A reboot may be needed before the reinstall.

That broke my web interface entirely. The file server, dns and dhcp are all working (and I tend to assume other daemons) but all web interfaces (the HDA as well as those of other web-apps) were down until I restored the plexms and plexms1 folder I'd removed ( I had stuck them in my home directory in case anything weird happened) from /var/hda/web-apps and rebooted again.

There are .conf files in /etc/http/conf.d folders that need removed or renamed as well.

Anywhere else I should be looking? Removed the folders from /var/hda/web-apps and the confs from /etc/httpd/conf.d. The web interface is working again, but I still have plexms and plexms1 in web-apps.

If you removed the folders, what do you mean folders are still there?
