Right now the owner of the media folder is root
should I change this to minidlna?
If so do I run the command...
cd /var/hda/files/movies/ && chown -R minidlna:users *

The folders/files must be owned by your first admin user:users. So running the command as noted should make things work.
I am running it in my Ubuntu server and had on Fedora as well with no issues. FYI, the versions are pretty much the same between Fedora and Ubuntu. The only real difference is we use the Ubuntu package. Otherwise the behavior should pretty much be the same.

hey bigfoot
if i run that command with the first admin account I get the error msg
"Operation not permitted" for each file
Now all the files/folders in /var/hda/files are owned by root.
Should I change them all to be the first admin user i created?

I have the same issue that movies folder is not showing but I will try the suggestion above and if I don't succeed will add a bug in the bug tracker.
Re: Amahi DLNA does not show all share dir (Ubuntu server 12
Has this been resolved?

No, not to my knowledge. I am pretty sure it is a user issue. I also have written a recent bug report where I think I have similar issues between CouchPotato trying to move files from the Transmission Torrents folder (although they are paused).Has this been resolved?
Re: Amahi DLNA does not show all share dir (Ubuntu server 12
Were the folder/file permissions set correctly? The problem is often they are not set to firstadminuser:users.
We have not verified the CouchPotato problem you identified. It could be isolated to your HDA as no one else has come forward with the same issue.
Permissions are critical for the apps. If they are set to root, the apps cannot do anything with them.
