i am running amahi dlna and have my movie collections as such:
/movies/genre/
in the genre folders, i have all the movies (mkv's, mp4's and avi's) for that genre and the respective cover art, ei:
movie (2010).mkv
movie (2010).jpg
however, my when i connect with my revue, i cannot see the dvd art. this file/folder structure works fine with twonky on both windows and ubuntu. is there a way to get this working with amahi dlna?

Of course a spcific client/server combination might support it, but I don't think it's part of the DLNA standard.
If Amahi DLNA is supposed to support it and you don't get it to work it could probably be that another naming convention is used. A common one is

Examples are
- XBMC, Media Center, Plex, Boxee etc connecting to the shares over SMB where the client application handles scraping
- Plex Client and Plex Media Server running on your Amahi. Here the Plex MEdia Server handles collection of data and presents it to the client. This makes it easy to avoid having to download metadata for several clients since all the data is stored and handeled by the server.
