CLOSED: Update to 5.XX Kernel with Fedora 27/Amahi 11

Postby Dixxhead » Sat Jul 03, 2021 3:58 am

I am experimenting with `urbackup` (https://www.urbackup.org/) as a backup-solution. For this I also formatted one of my drives to BTRFS. While it generally works great, the main developer `uroni` keeps recommending to update to a Kernel higher than 4.19 (ideally latest Fedora LTS/5.10).

I've done some reading, but it appears that upgrading the Kernel on Fedora 27 is not as trivial as, say, my Ubuntu 20.04 installation. Would it be possible to somehow upgrade the Kernel to 5.10+ and if so, how would I do that and would I risk to break compatibility with Amahi that way?

I don't believe it's possible to upgrade the Kernel to any newer version than available in Fedora 27.

You can search the internet, but I don't think it's doable.

Sorry.

That's a shame, but from my reading I expected as much. Thanks for the quick answer though!

This might be beyond the scope of this thread, but is there a specific reason the Amahi-Team chose Fedora? It feels like support for LTS in Fedora is very short and therefore even a recent Amahi install is outdated fairly quickly (by Linux-Community standards).

This has been addressed may times in the past. The Amahi developer chose Fedora due to experience.

We have tried to find a better OS (Ubuntu, CentOS, etc), but have been unsuccessful. The team is small, 1 developer and me for the most part.

We hope to one day find a longer term OS that will work with Amahi. For now, we have to continue with Fedora. BTW we are working on Amahi 12 which is based on Fedora 34. No estimate on release, but I believe we are close.

I totally understand. I myself am now also quite fond of your platform and would rather stick to it than move away! :) It's been an invaluable asset over the years.

I might just create a second hda and test the Amahi 12 Beta in the near future! Thanks for the quick answers so far. :)

Good to hear you are happy with Amahi and it provides for your basic needs.

We welcome your feedback if you choose to test Amahi 12. It's fairly stable, but not ready for production.

BTW, you might consider trying docker-ce App on Amahi, which is in BETA status. You could then use urbackup-server-docker App, in ALPHA status, without much fuss. It's built to the latest version available and all you have to do is adapt to your system needs.

If you are interested in trying it, please let me know via private message and I can give you access to test. We have quite a selection of Docker Apps that will be available in Amahi 12.

I presume we can mark this thread as closed.
