Backup my server

Postby mcai3db3 » Sun Oct 04, 2009 1:47 am

I have a QNAP NAS box with 3.5TB space on it. My server has 3.5tb in it. Thus, I just want to mirror the Amahi hdds to the QNAP box. Nothing more.

Any idea how to do this? My linux knowledge is shocking.

Any Amahi apps?

no Amahi apps yet AFAIK

you can try to setup rsync to the NAS.

I would do if I had the slightest clue how to do anything linux based. I'm not confident that I wouldn't just ruin my server somehow, and more importantly, have no clue how to fix it.

Anyway, this is pretty disappointing.

there's also unison. i'm afraid you are gonna have to get down and dirty at some stage with linux but hey..... it's good fun.

To be honest, it makes me more inclined to go to a more user friendly server OS. I have no interest in dabbling in linux. I'll enter the odd command, but I'm not going through full installations that way, otherwise the second something doesn't work perfectly, I'll be stuck.

I have been working with Clonezilla Live.

You do have to boot of CD and follow the menus, but you CAN back up all your partitions with compression.

I have been testing this to build restore checkpoints for test systems.

Obviously this is NOT incremental.

Hi mcai3db3,

Personally, I've been using "fwbackups" to backup my Amahi server OS and irreplaceable files (documents and photos mostly). Overall it is very simple to install and use, but, like anything else, there is a learning curve. fwbackups is also feature rich and can be used to backup Windows and Mac machines to the server as well. So it could be a one program for all platforms kind of deal.

Here is a link to their installation page http://www.diffingo.com/oss/fwbackups/d ... stallation.

If you chose to use fwbackups and have problems, I can help you out.

there are 3 GUI tools I'd like to mention (I've not tried them)
Amanda (community edition)
Bacula
BackupPC

so you may want to try those.

i can understand your sentiments about a more friendly os (WHS?). trust me, it isn't a patch on amahi. windows has its place, on desktops, exchange/outlook is good with activesync, IAS hasn't had a vulnerability to date whereas cisco's have etc
amahi is in it's infancy and will grow and i'm sure it will have more user friendly backups as time goes on.
personally i use mondoarchive.... not the prettiest thing going but you type "mondoarchive", up pops a window, select dvr and it burns to dvr and asks for new disks as it goes. same with tape, ftp, nfs etc.
it's that simple to use. with a restore, just pop the disks or tape back in, select "nuke" at the prompt and a bare metal restore takes place. select "interactive" for individual file restores.
it has never been known to fail since 2000 and is in use by major corporates throughout the world (siemens, nortel etc - where did they go??) it can be run remotely and while the system is in use etc.
unfortunetely, you have to download and install it and dependencies for it to run (terminal)
