CLOSED: Amahi destop icon for dashboard just goes to third part software site under construction

Postby arjay » Mon Oct 31, 2016 7:46 am

Sorry if this is an old chestnut. I have just installed Amahi over Ubuntu 12.02.4. So far all is fine but I want to access my dashboard. When i click on the icon on the desktop it just takes me to the "under construction" website for hda.com. Others must obviously know this - but i wonder why it has not been fixed by now. Anyway - how do I otherwise access my dashboard?

TIA

I have just installed Amahi over Ubuntu 12.02.4.
We no longer provide support for Ubuntu. It is in maintenance support status which means no updates to the Amahi platform or apps. Basically it's retired.

Recommend you install the latest version, Amahi 9 on Fedora 23. We do not support Desktop versions either, so all versions are now headless.

See http://docs.amahi.org for guidance.

Well thats a bummer. I hate anything rpm with a passion so it is highly unlikely that that I will install fedora for anything. Every time i have installed an rpm-based OS I have had nothing but problems with so-called "dependency hell". That goes for 6-7 years ago with redhat, then Mythdora a few years after that and several tries more recently with a bunch of rpm-based distros.. I can't understand why you support Fedora rather than *buntu which has a much larger installation base?

I also have an Orange router which is "sealed" in the sense that you cannot change any settings at all. Every effort to set a fixed ip or one with the 4th digit under 100 has completely failed including just about every variation of a terminal command I can find on the internet. All ip addresses are set automatically in the 100+ range so presumably that also rules out Amahi?

Seems that I'll have to look for a solution elsewhere. All I want to do is share some work-based files across my home network with several mixed Win 10 and Ubuntu/Kubuntu based PCs, a laptop and a tablet. Oh, and have them synced of course. I just thought a home server would be an interesting project to try as a possible solution (mainly to teach myself a bit about home servers) Amahi is touted as a "simple, straightforward" solution. Ho Ho you are having a giraffe as they say...

Fedora has gotten much better. Most find it works well as a home server solution. We've been using it for years with great success. On a side note, ironically we found Ubuntu was more of a pain. It was something we tried once. Seriously doubt we will every do it again. Maybe CentOS one day, but for now Fedora has worked best with Amahi.

Not really. You can set the DHCP range to anything you want on Amahi. With that being said, you can do the same with Fixed IP.

Amahi can fill that requirement as can a few other solutions. OpenMediaVault is one that might work for you.

Thanks for the reply. I did set the range as per the instructions but it must be over-written somehow because it never got set to the address I chose. Anyway thanks also for the tip to look at Openmediavault. At the mo I am just looking at owncloud but I will try them all in the end i guess.

Who knows - I might end up back here trying Amahi over Fedora. I have to be pretty desperate :)

Cheers

No problem.

Will mark this as solved.
