SOLVED: application error question

My Ubuntu 12.04 based HDA was used for backups. Every few weekends, I'd SSH in and update/upgrade to keep the security somewhat up to date. I didn't try to upgrade to another Ubuntu version.

Every now and then I pull up the dashboard to check drive usage and temps, etc. Last week i got the "application error .. you will be forwarded shortly" message and I'm not sure why.

I did the hdaclt restart with a reboot, and that didn't help
I don't think the drives are full:
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/sda1 19G 5.4G 13G 31% /
udev 988M 12K 988M 1% /dev
tmpfs 200M 1.3M 199M 1% /run
none 5.0M 0 5.0M 0% /run/lock
none 997M 0 997M 0% /run/shm
/dev/sda3 438G 908M 415G 1% /var/hda/files
/dev/sdb1 1.8T 1.4T 485G 74% /var/hda/files/drives/drive1
/dev/sdd1 1.8T 1.4T 484G 74% /var/hda/files/drives/drive2
/dev/sde1 1.8T 1.3T 512G 73% /var/hda/files/drives/drive3
none 4.0M 0 4.0M 0% /var/spool/greyhole/mem

a few more details:
this is a headless HP Mediasmart nas. Been running without issue for 2+ years on this amahi version. Since it is in part time service, no dhcp server is running. I use the router.
I can still access the drives, and it is still successfully backing up files from another NAS via rsync, every saturday.
I can SSH into it.
I saw something about changing the MTU to 1492 from 1500, but that didn't help. I emptied the GH trash too.

Any ideas/suggestions/things to check other than upgrade to the latest version? :D Any specific log files to check?

thanks, I didn't think to search on "dashboard". I got focused on the error message. All is back to working condition now, plus I learned how to hold a package from being updated.

Now, back to the weekend.
