Not disputing this... but doesn't it seem like the problem is more than just with the clients? i.e. if I am *on* the server, shouldn't "nslookup hda" return consistent results?
It should and this could be a network problem. I have seen where the HDA gets the wrong IP address via the router and then things get all confused.

It may require a network restart. Happened to me twice in the past few years.

Gotcha. Thanks again. Your experience and comments are a great help.
I'll give that a try from home tonight/tomorrow.

The key is that your clients get it's DHCP and DNS from the HDA. Recommend you check that for clients.

If that is the case, then we must look at other settings. I have seen where a complete recycle of the network helps too. That would involve shutting everything down, then power up the modem, router, HDA, followed by the clients.
Ok, powered everything down, and powered up the modem, router, HDA, and clients, as suggested.

nslookup hda on the server still points to the OpenDNS server(s):

Code: Select all

[root@home ~]# nslookup hda Server: 208.67.222.222 Address: 208.67.222.222#53 Non-authoritative answer: Name: hda.home.net Address: 107.20.240.37
Everything looks fine on the clients (i.e. consistent with what the Interactive Network Troubleshooter says it should be).

Any suggestions?

Turn on DHCP on your router and set it to hand out 1 IP address. If you can specify the range, make it the IP address of the HDA.

Then cycle your network, ensuring the HDA has the appropriate IP address before powering on any clients.

Many use this method when they cannot turn off DHCP on their router.

Fantastic!! This worked!
Everything else in the Troubleshooter steps looks fine, too. Thanks!

So... does this mean there was something (router??) on the network still acting as DHCP even though the router setting was off?
Am I having to accept tradeoffs of not using the fully recommended configuration?

Hard to say, but at least it's working now.

No that only applies if the HDA is not being used for DHCP. Since you are only using the router to supply the HDA, it should work normal.
