Plex / Amahi anywhere / owncloud

Hi, very new at this although have proudly got as far as installing fedora, Amahi and plex, on a standalone PC but reading seems to be making things worse so I thought I'd better ask
I'm trying to setup a cloud storage solution I can connect to remotely from my laptop / iPhone and a way for the family to access media on their devices. I'm a bit phased by port forwarding / vpn so I thought owncloud or Amahi anywhere would be a good way to upload/manage files. I have discovered you can't upload files to plex through the browser front end, so my next thought was to have 'music' and 'video' folders plex can share. Can this be done easily with either of these apps? Is one better than the other?
sorry if this is embarrassingly simple, but it looks like it could be such a great solution if I can get it to work. Thanks in advance..
