Cannot install desktop

Postby marcerickson » Thu Mar 19, 2015 5:57 pm

I tried the instructions here:
https://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/GUI_In ... Express_CD

I want Cinnamon, so I entered: yum install @cinnamon-desktop

I am getting timeouts from yum trying to contact repositories and mirrors.

This is a community supported tutorial. There may be something that has changed since it was developed.

Also given the timeouts, could be a problem with the repositories. Not much we can do to help with that sort of issue.

We strongly discourage installing a Desktop as it consumes a lot of resources and can impact your server performance.

I also cannot access the desktop.

I installed the latest headless express install then followed this:

https://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/GUI_In ... Express_CD

to install gnome.

It installed ok. I then followed the instructions to make the desktop the default when rebooting.

The "startx" command from the instructions above did not work but "reboot" did.

Upon reboot my machine reboots into schrodingers cat, but still without a desktop.

Any suggestions would be appreciated.

thanks

Did you enter all the commands as specified in the wiki?

This is not an officially supported feature, however it has worked for most. A server is intended to be headless, so most do have a need for a desktop.

The best option for installing Amahi with a desktop is to follow the Fedora 19 USB Install as it provides the desktop by default.
