How to install one click vnc

Postby droth49 » Fri Jan 30, 2015 10:39 pm

Just completed a new express 7.1 install and want to get vnc going. Bought the app but how do I get it installed? I can log in to the new system ok but want a gui before I start configuring my data on to a second drive. Also, this is a rebuild of an old ubuntu system using fedora 19. How do I move data from a previous app (recipe) to the new system? Where is it stored on the old hard drive?

To install an app you purchased, go to the "Apps" tab and look for in the "Available apps" section. Amahi 7 works pretty much the same as Amahi 6 did.

As for moving data from apps, you will most likely need to have backed up the MySQL databases for those that had them. I believe the Recipe app did, but that would be located on your previous Amahi OS installation. Do you still have access to that drive?

Yes, I still have access to the drive. I am having trouble with samba. My workgroup does not use the default name and when I change it in smb.conf samba quits. Also, when I shut down the old ubuntu server to begin work on 7.1, the old one will no longer start. it gives me a application error when I try to log in to it. Not really important if I can retrieve the data on the old hard drive manually. Still working on VNC, brought a new os hard drive and reinstalling with it to see if it makes a difference. Will be getting back to you if I can not figure it out.

Do not modify files manually, such as smb.conf. These are done via the Amahi Dashboard on your HDA. There is a setting in the Shares tab for setting the Workgroup.

If you do so in smb.conf, Amahi will rewrite the file on a samba restart and you will lose all settings.

No problem. That is the point of the dashboard.

I guess I am blind, I don't see where to change workgrounds in the Shares tab! I also do not see any apps in the apps area. Really hate bothering you with all this

Follow the enable advanced settings guidance to see the Workgroup setting.

As for apps, in the "Available Apps" tab you should see them. If you do not see any to install, then you have networking issues.

Re-installed the system several times, finally got vnc server up now samba is down and will not restart. Have tried to install a gui but the machine locks up when I apply the auto start and I get error messages when I use the startx command. I am trying to run xfce desktop. I am trying to us SSVNC as the client on my ubuntu box and that does not seem to be working. All of this and I have not even started trying to recover the data from the old hard drive! Any help?

Sorry but I cannot be much help here. Too many variables that make it fail vs succeed.

I would recommend you not install VNC. It adds a lot of overhead and often there are issues when users try to customize the desktop using other flavors as you are doing here. The intent of a server is to be headless.

Keep in mind that installing VNC does not add a full desktop like you would expect. It's a minimal desktop and typically only works using a VNC client.

If you are looking for a full desktop like with Ubuntu, then the best method is to follow the Fedora 19 USB install method. It leaves you with a full desktop by default.

Is there a reason you need a desktop on the server? I personally have been using servers for many years and find having a desktop takes up valuable system resources. There is so much overhead with what is installed and most of it I never use. Just curious.

BTW, what guidance have you been using to make these changes? Maybe there is something there that has caused the breakage of Samba.
