Crashplan and Greyhole newb questions

Postby Maxpwr » Sun Oct 12, 2014 10:29 am

OK so I have read on crashplan and greyhole about how they do not necessarily play together. Right my HDA has a 400 gb hard drive but I am going to get a 1 tb drive today to add to it. I know I want crashplan to back up my win 7 pcs; but I'm not sure if I need greyhole and how I can implement it properly on the 1tb drive. Can I split the drive in half with partitions 1 for backups for crashplan and the other for the other files that greyhole can use? Should I move my lz from my 400 gb to one of the partitions halves? Any help or advice on setup scheme would be great. As stated before I want to use the HDA for backups and media streaming to tv. Thanks.

Yes you can partition the drive into 2 parts. Use one for Greyhole and the other for Crashplan. It really is not necessary though as you can move the Crashplan Share to the larger drive and leave it out of the Greyhole storage pool. You can update the Share path in the dashboard once it's moved.

I would not worry about the size of the LZ unless you are almost out of space or think you will be out of space. By moving the Crashplan share to a different drive and not using it with Greyhole, the back ups will go straight to the 1TB drive and not affect the LZ.

So what would the point of using greyhole on the 400gb hard drive be since the only other drive 1tb would not be in the pool?

You can put the drive in the pool, just not the Crashplan share.

UPDATE: Recommend you read the wiki guidance about how Greyhole works. Greyhole is configured on a per share basis, meaning not all shares have to use Greyhole.

OK went back and re-read and I understand it better. In regards to the greyhole app ui, if that is paid for will that also install greyhole at the same time or just allow the use of a gui and I still need to manually install greyhole by use of command line?

It's the complete package. If you already have Greyhole installed, it will just install the GUI. Otherwise it installs both.

Recommend you check out this in the wiki if you already had Greyhole set up.
