RESOLVED: Dynamic DNS Link
RESOLVED: Dynamic DNS Link
Ok so I point my browser to my *****.yourhda.com. When I do this my router running dd-wrt shows its control panel opening page instead of my hda homepage. What settings do I need to change to get it to point my HDA dashboard? To edit this I read that the forwarding did not take place. Do I have to worry about security intrusions outside of my network since my router page is shown like that?

Re: Dynamic DNS Link
Thanks for the link. I read through it and it sounds like if I did not set up the port forwarding on my router then the dynamic link will not work external to my network. I did confirm this with my cellphone by trying to access the webpage through the cellular network and it did not display my router page or HDA which is what I was looking for.
Re: Dynamic DNS Link
What port did you forward? Is it possible there is a problem with your ISP blocking things?

Re: Dynamic DNS Link
Just a quick note. When you access your external IP from inside your network, and you have a DDWRT router (and many others of the Linksys flavor), it automatically detects it and sends your browser to the internal page of your router. this is why, when you access it with an external device like your phone you do not see your admin page.
That said, you will need to forward one port (any port) to port 80 of your hda to see the admin. this is discouraged as it's plain text (anyone looking at the traffic could see your passwords) and it could also expose your HDA to vulnerabilities like the recent "shellshock" issue.
The VPN is the secure way to access your network remotely.

Re: Dynamic DNS Link
So if I do not forward the port (haven't set it up yet) and just stick with VPN then I shouldn't have any security issues? I am wanting to keep my server secure and really only accessible on my network. Just wanting to use it to perform backup operations and possibly media streaming to my TV.
