Naming my hda and set up on wireless computer

Postby fiverueckls » Wed Apr 23, 2014 7:34 pm

Hi all,

I have not gotten to the point of setup, yet. I had to create an account to get on the forum, so I chose a second choice name "fivelastname". What I really want is "5lastname" but I was not allowed. Why can't I use that?

Question 2: I am planning to set this server up on a computer that will connect to my router via WiFi. Can that be done? If so, what problems does that setup introduce?

Question 3: Is there a Amahi download or do I simply install Fedora? Where do I get the download?

Thanks for any help!

Not sure why the username did not work.

Amahi must be installed on a hard wired system. See the https://docs.amahi.org and https://wiki.amahi.org for more info.

OK, thanks for the reply. I am confused about my choice of user name, as well. When I entered 5Rueckls(.yourhda.com), there was a popup that stated "format must be Username". I have no idea what that means.

Anyway, since I have to hard wire the computer, I have some additional questions:

1. Once installed, I understand that the Amahi box will handle DHCP for my home. Will that change any of my security settings (i.e WPA password)? Will I need to "reconnect" all of the wireless devices (TV's, ipad, ipod, phones, win tablets, Blu Rays, on and on...) or will they just connect?

2. I have a hard wired box that is currently running Plex. If I add a Amahi box, will that interfere with my Plex box? Should/Can I move Plex to my Amahi box?

As you can see, I am trying to figure everything out (for the most part) before I "jump in". I appreciate your patience with my "newbie" questions.

They should connect no problem. You might have to renew the IP on them to pick up the new lease from the HDA, but no password or security settings need changed.

It should not interfere. You can install the Amahi Plex Media Server app or stick with your current setup. Be aware the Amahi version is specific to Amahi and can only be upgraded via the Amahi repo. You cannot manually upgrade it as you can your other box.

Thanks! Is there a way to back up photos from my phone to my server? I see an android app, but it looks like that syncs to Amahi.

Yes there are a few ways.

You could use an Android file manager app, like ES File Explorer (https://market.android.com/details?id=c ... .pop&hl=en). Just connect to the HDA and copy away.

It is also possible to connect the phone directly to the HDA, but a bit more complicated. Another is to copy files to your client PC, then copy to HDA from there.

I would probably go with the first option as it's the simplest method in my opinion. I am sure there are other options as well that I have not thought of to accomplish this task.

Thanks for the reply. I have a wifi transfer app on my phone. I can manually move files from the phone to the computer. To get a bit deeper on this topic, I am interested in setting up an automatic save of any photos or video taken. I currently use Dropbox or Copy. I take a photo on my phone, it "magically" appears in a folder on my computer.

What I am looking for is an alternative to Dropbox, one where the backup is automatic and to my HDA. I don't mind complicated!

Don't think we have what you are looking for exactly. We do have CrashPlan which allows backup of Clients to the HDA.

There is also some guidance in the wiki for adding Dropbox to the HDA. It's not officially supported.
