SOLVED: DNS on HDA slow resolve addresses

Postby kysdaddy » Tue Apr 01, 2014 12:12 pm

Ubuntu desktop 12.04 amahi

I have installed and set this up several times on several machines and I can not get DNS to work.

I have done this things.
hda-change-dns 8.8.8.8 8.8.4.4 the change succeds but issue remains
Changed to OpenDNS no joy
changed the network card dns, no joy
when I ping router.hda.xxxxhi.net it takes 51.5 ms minimum

I'm at a loss!!

If it was me, I would upgrade to Amahi 7. Everything works much better. There is also 3 DNS providers preprogammed :)

In case you were not aware, we not longer support Ubuntu with app updates or new features. It is in maintenance mode. Our officially supported version if Fedora 19.

I have been running it for months and have been really pleased with the speed and efficiency of it compared to Ubuntu.

That's an option and I tried it but I cant get that working either.
I load the CD reboot and see local host login

I'll try it again but is there a step by step anywhere?

That is normal, it is a headless server as the documentation states. Follow the guidance on http://docs/amahi.org

If you want a GUI desktop like Ubuntu, you can try the Fedora 19 USB Install. It is not officially supported, but I have tested it several times with positive results.

Well I guess I give up.
I tried both fedora installs
two different machines, no Joy.

Coul it be my control panel?
Network 192.168.1.*
HDA IP Address 192.168.1.5
Network Gateway 192.168.1.1

I DON'T KNOW WHERE ELSE TO LOOK.

Take a look at this:

Also ensure if you are using DVD, that you verify the instal media is not corrupt.

Please follow the guidance on http://docs.amahi.org

If you can provide more details of your trouble, we may be able to help.

Thanks for the help.
I'm pretty sure that the HTTP server is starting as clients pick up an IP but cant resolve DNS.

I think the issue may be no second reboot but I am not seeing a resolution.

"The solution was to reinstall and leave the Network page of the installer the defaul localhost.localdomain "

I didn't change anything in the installer, unless it is talking about in the control panel.
If so what does it want me to put in "Home Domain amahi.net"

Thanks again

You can leave the domain as the default. The key is that you leave it long enough for the second reboot.

The HTTP server has nothing to do with the clients getting an IP address. That is done by the DHCP server. The HTTP server is what makes the dashboard available.

In the installer, just configure the root user password and a create a user. Of course set the Time zone too if needed. I would recommend you leave the Network part alone and only have one hard drive connected.

The doc site and the wiki reference I provided previously pretty much step you through the installation.

If you are still having DNS issues, then may your router is controlling the DNS. Some routers have to have DNS disabled to prevent this from occurring.

Sorry, it was late and I miss typed HTTP instead of DHCP(dummy) But what I don't get is once DHCP is disabled in my router and ip's are issued from the HDA why won't the DNS resolve?
The clients are picking up the HDA as the DNS server, NSLookup shows the correct DNS Server, the DNS server of the HDA is set to my ISP dns and 8.8.8.8
it should work.

If I read the directions correct, I wait until after HDA is completely installed and running before I disable DHCP on my router. Is that right?

Should I disable HTTP earlier in the installation process?

Yes that is correct, disable DHCP once the HDA is working.

Have you tried clearing the browser cache? Also can you access the HDA via IP address?
