SOLVED: New Amahi/Ubuntu installation can't add shares

Postby wifibeagle » Tue Mar 04, 2014 12:39 pm

I have installed Amahi 6 on a fresh Ubuntu 12.04.2 desktop install. When I go to the dashboard I can see the configured shares. When I select the "New Share" red button it disappears and nothing else happens. How do I add new shares?

I have had various home servers before from two versions of WHS to Win8. I also have a couple Ubuntu PCs, one for home automation and one for a CNC machine. I'm exploring Amahi as an alternative to just using Ubuntu server with LAMP, etc. added. I can figure out how to make Ubuntu server do what I need (mostly file sharing and backups) but Amahi looked easier and more expandable. So far I'm a little disappointed in the dashboard but I'll accept it is my newbie status.

I know this may sound silly, but did you scroll down to the bottom of the page? I have done the same thing, but it opened at the bottom underneath the button.

Also not sure if you are aware, but Ubuntu is not the latest stable release of Amahi 7. It's in maintenance mode, so we won't be updating it or any associated apps.

Would be happy to help.

Well I feel pretty dumb! I had scrolled down before hitting the "Add Shares" button but not after.

Sure enough there did appear additional options below the visible part of the screen. Once I scrolled down I was able to add a share.

Actually it wasn't quite that easy. After configuring my router to use Amahi as the primary DNS and 8.8.8.8 as the secondary I was no longer able to open the dashboard. It took me to OpenDNS saying the address hda could not be found. I changed the router back to using my ISP's default DNS and rebooted Amahi as a brute force DNS flush. Then I could open the dashboard and try adding a share again.

I still haven't figured out the best combination for Amahi and my Netgear router for DHCP and DNS but that's a question for another day...

Not a problem. I was surprised the first time I created a share. Usually the screen drops down for input, but this one did not.

You should be able to turn off DHCP on your router and then let the HDA handle it and DNS. The DNS on your router can stay on as it should not interfere. Since you will be getting DHCP from the HDA, the clients should automatically pick up the DNS from it as well.
