SOLVED: remote mySQL login

Hi Guys (sorry a Gals),
I have been running a small FreeNas server for a couple of years and decided it was time to play with something new and so I am not trying ubuntu and Amahi for the first time. My first encounter with ubuntu and so everything is 10 times harder than expected. But hey...
Anyway - I can see that mysql is installed and using Chive, I can create a schema and perform queries etc. I know the root password - all is OK.
So now I want to connect to the database from my desktop PC (e.g from a self made application or mysql workbench or whatever). The problem is, no matter what privileges I grant, the connection always gets rejected. Can you tell me is there a firewall in place or some security 'thing' stopping LAN connections to the database?
Posted this as a newbie. I hope this is OK.
Thanks
