Hi Guys (sorry a Gals),
I have been running a small FreeNas server for a couple of years and decided it was time to play with something new and so I am not trying ubuntu and Amahi for the first time. My first encounter with ubuntu and so everything is 10 times harder than expected. But hey...
Anyway - I can see that mysql is installed and using Chive, I can create a schema and perform queries etc. I know the root password - all is OK.
So now I want to connect to the database from my desktop PC (e.g from a self made application or mysql workbench or whatever). The problem is, no matter what privileges I grant, the connection always gets rejected. Can you tell me is there a firewall in place or some security 'thing' stopping LAN connections to the database?
Posted this as a newbie. I hope this is OK.
Thanks
SOLVED: remote mySQL login
Re: remote mySQL login
Good chance the firewall is on your client. You will have to enable port 3306 access.

Re: remote mySQL login
Hi,
Thanks but in this case definately not. My desktop PC's and work laptop all connect to work based databases and to the database on my FreeNAS server. There is definately something not configured, or firewalled or ????? at the Amahi server.
Having serached for hours, I am out of ideas.

Re: remote mySQL login
Firewall is disabled on the HDA. Keep in mind Amahi is a platform add on, so it does not administer any firewalls. That would be the resposibility of the OS. Might be worth searching the internet for the distribution or even checking MySQL web site.

Re: remote mySQL login
OK - This is solved.
I had initially tried Amahi 6 and was unable to open the mysql database for remote access. This was after searching cnf files and also granting privileges to the users. It just would not work.
So, I have now wiped the system and installed Amahi 7 from the express CD. This allowed remote access as soon as I granted the correct privileges to the user accounts. Simple clear and easy!!
This issue is solved from my perspective as I have a solution that I am happy with.
I have to say, I really do prefer Amahi 7. Headless, simple, fast. I like it.

Re: SOLVED: remote mySQL login
Glad it's working for ya. Amahi 7 is leaner and faster. Still have some tweaks to finish, but it appears to be working well.

Re: SOLVED: remote mySQL login
SQL root access from the internet through port 3306 not a good idea. I'd setup ssh on an obscure port and allow public login with a non-root account with keys then drop to root after login to access sql as its root user. mysql root and server root are 2 different accounts just fyi.
Re: SOLVED: remote mySQL login
HI,
I have no intention of doing remore access over the internet. My problem was on my local network only.
Cheers
