Full replacement for my QNAP ... and something on top :D

Postby ksinge » Wed Sep 11, 2013 6:38 am

Hello everybody.

As my Qnap does not really provide me with everything (I think) I need, I was looking for a different solution.
WINDOWS in my household is only good for gaming, so not an option.

I already installed version 7 in a VB and tested but I had to find that not all the software is available for the Fedora19 Verion yet.

Can Amahi fulfill my wishes completely?
My wishes:

1: Raid 1 (2x1TB-Drives)
2: Printserver
3: Scanserver
4: Calender (Accessible from Android & Kontact)
5: E-Mail-Server (not necessarily but would be fine)
or 4 + 5 Groupware
6: Download Server (Download tasks)

Thanks for your reply and the great work you do.

Regards Thorsten

Many of those requests can be handled without Amahi even involved, but Amahi provides the convenience of facilitating much of the underlying stuff, such as Windows shares/ fileserver.

1: Raid 1 (2x1TB-Drives)
can be done via hardware or software (OS installation can start a raid array)
2: Printserver
can be done by installing and configuring CUPS
3: Scanserver
I'm not sure if CUPS handles scanners, but I'm sure there's a Linux software that handles scanners
4: Calender (Accessible from Android & Kontact)
I think the Amahi Calendar can do this, and there's likely other Linux wares that can do this
5: E-Mail-Server (not necessarily but would be fine)
can also be handled by another server app that Amahi may or may not have
6: Download Server (Download tasks)
easily handled by providing a VNC session to the Fedora desktop or, using a web-ui to a daemon server for downloading. I do this with qbittorent-nox on a separate fileserver VM from my Amahi VM.

Thank you for your quick respond.

I think the scanner can be shared via SANE.
