anything wrong with this server build?

Postby kenwylie » Sun Apr 28, 2013 11:49 am

I am wanting to buy and build a server to do VPN service (for safe internet browsing) for some friends who work outside the country and are currently paying fees for VPN services.

I have only built a few computers and they were all for Windows.
I am planning to use Amahi for Ubuntu, the 64-bit versions.

Does anyone see anything inherently wrong with this build? Any parts overkill? Any changes you would recommend?

Thanks very much!!

You might have trouble fitting the heatsink in the case. Probably won't be an issue, but my case is pretty large but because it had a pull out MB tray, I had to return the heatsink. I'm actually running an AMD 8-core on the stock heatsink and maintaining good tems (no O.C.)

You're using an Ivy Bridge chip on a board that supports 1600mhz RAM - get the faster RAM. And get 8GB min of dual channel while you're at it. With only 4GB, there's not much reason to go 64bit...

The board has a Realtek 8111E onboard LAN - I recommend you buy an Intel NIC as the Realtek has some documented issues with linux.

SSD can be rough on linux - i.e. early burnout. Don't use it for your greyhole LZ or you'll be needing another one soon.

Search around the Ubuntu forums with the model numbers of your proposed build and see if anyone has had problems. That's a good way to get a base line of compatibility and workaround issues you may run across.
