Adding files to shares

Postby tvmangum » Sat Jan 26, 2013 9:12 am

I know that this is a dumb question but is there an easy way to add files to the shares? I have tried several of the methods online to add files but I am wondering if there is an easy way to copy files from an external hard drive to my server. This now is my hold up from fulling implementing the server.

I know I'm missing something elementary so I'm probably overthinking the solution.

That's is what I have tried several times and it appears that files are not be copied to the server. I'll try again so hopefully I can get it to work.

What client OS are you using? Also check the permissions of the shares. They should be owned by firstadminuser:users.

Our "server" is running Windows Vista Home Premium and the laptops are all running Windows 7 Home Premium.

Check the permissions of the shares. Where are you trying to copy files from? The Windows client or server?

Actually trying to copy from external hard drive. Once I know the data is backed up safely on the server--and redundantly through JungleDisk and Amazon Web Services--I am going to delete the date it from the external hard drive and use it for additional storage.

As I was typing I just thought--add the external hard drive as a drive with the data still on it to keep disk space on the server. Wouldn't have to copy the data--just make sure I could see from clients.

That is another option. If you are wanting to copy files to shares, just use Windows Explorer to access them.

Then just add mapped drives on the laptops?

Not sure if I'm going to add the external hard drive to the server as I want to be able to still put files on it and move them from computer to computer in case they don't fit on my flash drive.

You can do that or access files from windows clients via \\hda\share, providing the external drive is connected to a client. You do not have to connect it to the HDA directly.
