I have a first gen HP MediaSmart Server that I am looking to replace. The rest of my network is Mac. I am interested in Amahi because it looks very similar, even with Greyhole as an alternative to Drive Extender.
Anyhow, it has been a long while since I built a system or ran Linux. I was looking at the HP N40L as a hardware replacement for the HP MSS. Does this sound like a good solution? I'll re-use the drives from my MSS. I also have a eSata 5 drive bay. The plan is to move data to external HDDs and then plug the HDDs into the new system. Does this sound good?
If not the HP N40L, any other suggestions?

Nothing? If not the HP N40L, what box do you suggest for an Amahi build?

Re: HP N40L?
I don't have experience with any with using the HP N40L....yet, though I'm considering replacing my current "server" a Dell Inspiron laptop with one. I have seen a couple of HP N36L servers (the N40L's predecessor) on the "show us your server" post, so it should work! If you do end up buying one, please let me know, I would like to know of your experience with them.

Re: HP N40L?
This is really common request, though we do not really have recommendations, one way or another.
We are thinking perhaps we could make a few standard configurations that we can recommend/endorse.
As far as the HP N40L, I think I read somewhere that it would install, however, there is the issue of video during installation. I think some of these did not have video out?

The HP N40L has VGA out, and a review I read said that FreeNAS worked very well out of the box, so I think both Fedora and Ubuntu should work just as well.

Re: HP N40L?
The N40L meets all the requirements except that it doesn't come with a CD/DVD drive so you would either have to buy a CD/DVD drive and install it, or attempt a USB install of Amahi (which is not supported).
Re: HP N40L?
I just bought a N36L. I downloaded the Ubuntu iso and used unetbootin for Windows to create a bootable USB. Worked fine. No real need for a DVD drive just for installation. Amahi works very well on the HP Microserver.
Re: HP N40L?
I agree - works superbly well on my N40L, and can be set up with a USB version of Ubuntu 12.04 desktop LTS 64 bit
