Hi all
I currently run a vbulletin forum on a VPS with full root access. Hosted at 1and1.
My forum makes extensive use of Mediafire download links for all the files that I need to supply members.
We are in the middle of another Mediafire links problem, sometimes links work sometimes they don't.
Frankly we are sick of it.
I would love to be able to run my own server from home just to serve the files to the authorised members.
I have a spare PC and have 20Meg upload speeds on the internet connection here.
I also see the AjaXplorer app that seems to be able to handle secure file downloads for members and much more.
Can someone confirm that by installing Amahi and AjaXplorer, or a similar app, it would allow me to have all my files on this one PC and allow safe and secure access to my paid up forum members to get the required files?
I would also like a maximum number of files per day to be set.
Any advice would be very much appreciated.
Will Amahi do what I need?
Re: Will Amahi do what I need?
I would say most definitely Amahi could do the job. You can expose a web app to outside your network and users could log in as you described. I would not recommend AjaXplorer though as there is a better candidate. OpenVPN ALS is a clientless VPN that requires no software to be installed on the users machine.

You can control users, permissions, and file access completely. It is very secure and offers the capability to download multiple files at one as a zip file. I have used it often when I am away from home to get my files.

Re: Will Amahi do what I need?
Hi
Many thanks for the reply.
Seemed perfect so I went off to install Ubuntu.
What a total nightmare.
I am using a 2Ghz processor, Nvidia Vanta graphics card, 765Meg of memory or somethink like that
PS2 Mouse and Keyboard and IDE hard drive. So nothing special.
I couldn't get the recommended Ubuntu download to install.
Tried the alternative download and got a totally different installation interface.
Got it installed eventually.
Now at boot up I get as far as the password request screen and on trying to enter my password 1 of two things happens.
Either the letters I type in appear very slowly on the screen of the whole screen locks up and I can't move the mouse or do anything other than turn it all off.
What a waste of the afternoon that has been.
Any suggestions before I chuck the lot out?

Re: Will Amahi do what I need?
Looks like I have solved the problem.
I took a closer look at the graphics card.
Looked nasty and cheap, not like an Nvidia card at all.
I just changed it with a Geforce card and a different monitor.
I am now successfully installing from scratch with the first install CD I made that didn't work before.

Sometimes hardware is a problem, especially for older machines. Glad you got things resolved.

Re: Will Amahi do what I need?
Hi
Yes, thanks all installed OK now.
I paid for the software recommended last night.
I did a full install of Ubuntu again today as I wasn't convinced everything installed correctly.
Now the software I paid for is not anywhere to be found. How do I get it back? I assumed it would appear when I was logged back in.
Still trying to workout this port forwarding. I seem to have lots of options on the router, for games, html, ssh.
Not sure which option to choose.

Re: Will Amahi do what I need?
ok, got the software back but have no idea how to set the port forwarding up on my BT Infinity hub.
I only have a list of games and applications to choose from.
What do I choose, HTTP, HTTPS, VNC, there is a lot of games listed as well.
I have tried a few and put the HDA IP Address in and tried with the copmputers name as well but no joy.
Can anyone assist please?

Re: Will Amahi do what I need?
I have found a router page that allows me to select UDP or TCP or Any
There are 2 boxes to enter the port range, I entered 1194 - 1194 then there are two boxes that say "Translate To" where you can enter port numbers only. From the instructions I need to enter the HDA IP address but can't.........

Re: Will Amahi do what I need?
I have worked out how to configure the router for 1194 but it still doesn't work.
I have used an on-line port tester and it times out.
I tried various pre-defined rules on the BT router like www on port 80.
The open port test can then find that port.
If I try others like SSH, FTP, SMTP then the port test doesn't find them.
Which seems odd as they are pre-defined in the routerfor you to use.
Can anyone suggest anything else to try please?

To assist anyone with a BT Home Hub 3.0 Type A further, this is a known issue and the only way to resolve the problem is to get rid of the BT Home Hub and use something else.
Routers recommended by BT forum members can be found here.
