Free Space on Disk

I'm relatively inexperienced with Linux and am happy with amahi so far., I'm running a headless system.

I'm running out of space on my disc and am looking to drop a new disc into the server. Think I can manage this but not having a lot of free time on my hands I had a look at the dashboard it was showing 120gb free space, but when connected to the server with my laptop using windows when I right click properties it is showing 27.5gb free. Any ideas why?

I have deleted files from the server using my PC and laptop buy not sure if they have been completely removed from the server in the way the recycle bin works in windows. Any help would be appreciated.

I've got a 2tb drive installed and it has 3 partitions. Partition 2 on the dashboard indiactes 1.8TB with 119gb free; Windows indicates total 1.75TB, free 27.9GB

Hello,

Do a df -h as root user in terminal window and it will tell you where the space it allocated.

Best when you install Fedora 14 and Amahi on a large disk to manually set the partitions. Otherwise you end up with a huge home partition.

I would follow the wiki guidance and redo your partitions.

http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Install_without_LVM

Leave the remaining space alone on install and then you can format/mount it after things are set up. Make the big space /var/hda/files and that will give you more room for your shares.

This would require a reinstall, but its best to get it right to start. Being a linux rookie, you might consider using a smaller drive for the OS like 500GB or less. Then add your 2TB for additional storage and Greyhole.

Hope I have not lost you.

Thanks for the reply bigfoot, I've currently got 3 partitions on the 2TB drive, 19gb, 9.6gb and 1.8TB but have been toying with the idea of a fresh install on a 250GB drive I've got spare just need to get the stuff already on the server off it before doing a fresh install. Fortunateky have 2 x1TB external drives that I could use for that very purpose.

I work away from home and won't get a chance to do a fresh install for a couple pf weeks. I assume that with a fresh install I'll still use the same activation code for my HDA and won't lose any of the apps I've already purchased.

That is correct, once you purchase apps they are yours. As for the 250GB drive, I would connect only that one until you have Fedora 14 and Amahi installed. Then connect them and follow the wiki guidance for adding drives.

It works better that way. Then you can use them for Greyhole pooling and redundancy or whatever you choose.
