<anything>.home.com goes to an external website

When attempting to go to any of my apps... <appname>.home.com... from a computer in my network, I get redirected to an external website, home.com. I've tried pinging one of the apps from that computer, and it goes to 66.114.124.140.

I cannot disable DHCP or DNS on my router - the router is also used for my cable box, so DCHP and DNS settings are disabled. Is there anything else that I can do so I can access the apps from other computers? Besides going through VPN each time?

Take a look at the Amahi FAQ in regards to using the DHCP/DNS server on your router. That is the problem as without using the Amahi DNS, things do not work as well without some additional steps.

So basically I'm screwed... definitely can't turn off the router's DCHP or DNS... unless... do you think putting a different router between the AT&T router and the computers will work?

You could probably add an addition router and use it like a switch. Not sure if it will work, but worth a shot.

You are probably not the only one with this type of service. Search the forums and you might find other solutions.

I have ATT dsl which come with a crappy dsl modem/router combo that doesn't allow one to turn off DHCP. I was able to get around this by adding a second router. You basically connect a LAN port to your second router's WAN port. Then on the first router you need to turn on the DMZ (De-Militarized Zone) feature which basically pass all traffic directly to the second router, no firewall no NAT (i think), no nothing). Anyways long story short, just check if your current router has the ability to turn on DMZ. My setup is basically the above and it works great.

i had the same problem even if i switched off DNS and DHCP on my router. I have an provider branded Zyxel-Router where i can switch it off (at least i thinks it is switched off if i do so using the web interface).

And to be honest: I dont have any idea, why this should work if one switch off DHCP and DNS on the router.

This is one of the worst decission on the WIKI to use an existing domain. I reinstalled my HDA this week and during installation of Fedore (and also while adding my profile for my HDA on amahi.org) i've choosen a non-existing domain (*.network.whatever)

Also i really see no advantage in using my HDA as DNS and DHCP server instead of the DHCP and DNS on my router.
Instead of using http://myphpadim i could use http://hda/phpmyadmin and give hda a static IP in my router.

This works with the router DHCP/DNS off because the router connects to one device (i.e. HDA) with those turned off. Then, the HDA controls those functions providing the customization Amahi offers. There is a downside to not using the HDA for DHCP/DNS as noted in the FAQ:

Amahi does not resolve like a normal server (i.e. IP address/app), so this does not work. If you are able to resolve http://appname to http://hda/appname, I would be interested to know how you did it. I have never seen Amahi work in that manner.

An since my HDA has the domain home.com (which is the default or it's recomended somwhere in the installation guide), i will never be able to access the real home.com domain. Note: I guess you meant "..with those turned on"

Ok, make sense, but anyhow it's better to chose a non exsiting domain name.
Also one has to renew the DHCP lease after turning DHCP and DNS off in the router
On Windows this can be done with "ipconfig /renew".

I will try this if my system is up and running. This should be possible by editing the apache config. My understanding so far is, that each application runs as an virtual host in apache.

I'm using monoWall as my router. All I did was set my HDA as one of the Primary DNS entries in my router. So whenever I go to the requested hda app URL, my HDA DNS redirects to the internal IP.

So, using that same logic, I'm assuming you can just set a staic DNS entry in your system to the Amahi box, so hopefully any reference to whatever.home.com will be resolved by Amahi.

You can also make a static entry in your host file, for *.home.com 192.168.1.xx (or what ever your HDA ip is)
