Adding new App does showup

I create a new webapp through advanced settings and installed joomla CMS on my somewhat clunky system and created the directories, permissions, database, etc and works okay. But it doesn't give an option of listing on the dash board.?
When I install from the app list it gives an option of "List in Dashboard" - the "New App" doesn't even come up as being installed?
I AM having dramas with Rails app errors occasionally and wondering if its just my clunky install.
I couldn't find any reference on wiki etc re dashboard.
Also is it possible to modify the dashboard as I was wondering about having a custom page for when I log on rather than showing generic.

There currently is no feature for adding a user created web app to the dashboard. We have it on our to do list.
