stuck on install\can't add amahi repository during install

Postby breli » Sun Feb 12, 2012 1:51 pm

Hi,

I am a Newbie to Amahi (and Linux for that matter) and have a problem during the installation. My HDA specs are as follows (build from scratch):

CPU Intel Celeron G530
8GB RAM
Motherboard Intel DB65ALB3
2 TB Samsung HD
DVD drive

I downloaded the full DVD ISO of Fedora 14 from one of the mirrors. Installtion runs just fine as far as I can tell. However, when prompted to add additional repositories I can't add the Amahi repository. I can press the ok button all day but nothing happens (cancel closes the dialog). Whenever I try to continue the installation, I end up with a "normal" Fedora desktop (which is fine). However, I don't have network access. The HDA is connected via cable to a switch to a router (internet dialin and DHCP). I feels as if there is a problem with the network adapter of my HDA? Probalby a driver issue? I rule out problems with the cables sind anything else I plug in there works just fine.

Any ideas? Any help is greatly appreciated :) ...

cheers

Yep, sounds like a driver issue with your NIC. Also ensure the DVD download matched the MD% checksum. I have seen some bad DVD burns that caused issues as well.

Hi,
Yep, sounds like a driver issue with your NIC. Also ensure the DVD download matched the MD% checksum. I have seen some bad DVD burns that caused issues as well.
Thanks for the answer. I ran the "check disk" routine prior to the first install. It turned out to be fine. I'll doublecheck the MD5 checksum just to be on the safe side, though.

Is there any chance that I can fix the driver issue? My hardware is quite standard so I hoped that I don't have to mess with drivers and tinker manually ...

cheers

Fedora sometimes does not support NICs well. You may wanna try installing again and see if you end up with the same results.

Once way to verify if your NIC is supported is to check Fedora web site. You could also download the Live CD. Boot with it and see if you have internet access. Do not install from it though, this is just a driver test method.

Please let us know how it goes.

Hi,

I downloaded a live cd of Fedora 14 and ended up with the same problems. However, I also downloaded Fedora 16 and this version seems to handle my hardware much better: everything works like a charm AFAIKT :)

So, since setting up a HDA without network access is kinda pointless ;) my natural question is, whether Amahi will run on a Fedora 16 installation?

[edit]ok, i found the topic about F16. Looks like I'll do some testing although I don't even know what to look for since all of this is new to me anyway 8-) LOL![\edit]

Cheers

Amahi does not support Fedora 16 yet. We are still developing it, so there are some things that do not function. Also, there are no apps available for users as this time. The shares do not work nor is Greyhole tested with this version.

We hope to get it done in the next month, but hard to give a firm date. I would recommend you try to find a way to update your Fedora 14 install to work with your NIC. There is a lot of help out there, so I am sure you can get it going with some persistence.

Hi there,

I did some digging on this and wanted to share some insights just in case somebody else runs into similar problems. Again, I use a Intel motherboard with B65 chipset (see http://www.intel.com/content/www/us/en/ ... b65al.html). It has an Intel® 82579V Gigabit Ethernet Controller. This is really standard hardware which is why I was quite surprised to run into dealbreaker problems like this. I don't need no sound or fancy lights or advanced thermal management or any other scifi features irrelevant for HDAs, but I really really need the network to play along ;) ...

Apparently, the problems with F14 and some NICs are fairly common. There was\is a bug in some kernels that caused problems with certain ethernet controllers (not just this specific one).

Some threads that discuss the issue:
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=257676
http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=254042

A potential solution was posted here: http://forums.fedoraforum.org/showthread.php?t=257701

If\when I find some time I'll try to get it running that way  however, I assume Amahi will be ready for F16 before I get through this ;)

cheers

Hope you have success. Don't count on Amahi for Fedora 16 being ready on time. We still have some issues to resolve and testing to complete.

Hi there,

I actually got it working by following the procedure posted above. I had to install the rpms one by one though. I followed the Amahi installation instructions here http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Self-install-existing. So far so good. Now I can explore what I got myself into :) ...

Thanks for the help!

Cheers

I had the same problem and got the network working by following the above instructions too. According to the Self-install-existing on the wiki page i should run yum -y update dhclient, but then i get an error and now i'm stock. Did you have the same problem? My installation is "fresh", the only thing i did was following the above instructions.
