Computer won't shut down

Postby marcerickson » Mon Nov 14, 2011 12:27 pm

After installing Amahi, the computer will not shut down. When told to reboot or shut down, there's a snap sound, the monitor goes black, and the Caps Lock and Scroll Lock keyboard LEDs start blinking in unison. The computer remains powered up until the power button is held in until it turns off.

I believe this is an Amahi problem as it shut down OK on Fedora 14 and on Win98 and Win2000.

The computer is an IBM NetVista 6579-TAU with 900 MHz Celeron and 512 MB RAM.

It could be the machine hardware does not support the shutdown via Amahi dashboard.

You can access your HDA via SSH or VNC to shut it down. Also, have you installed the latest Fedora 14 updates? That might help.

Thank you for the suggestions - I'm updating Fedora with yum and hoping that helps.

RE: shutdown - I am attempting shutdown from the local machine (System > Shutdown) and not via the Amahi dashboard.

Ok, maybe try the Dashboard link then. Also, I presume you are using "shutdown now -P" as root user.

None of the methods works - shutdown or reboot still hangs even after updating.

Admittedly it's not a huge deal - but I don't like software that doesn't behave. :-(

the blinkenlights mean there's a kernel panic

check your logs (/var/log/messages mainly) to see what's happening.
dmesg may be of use as well but that's a ring buffer log (this means your logging is gone as soon as you reboot).

I've posted this issue over at the Fedora forums as that location seems more appropriate:

Hope you get it figured out. We would be interested to hear the solution.
