Confirm DNS and DHCP.

Postby surfrock66 » Sun Oct 09, 2011 6:47 pm

I just rebuilt my HDA, reinstalled from scratch. I just set up static routes for every device on my network...I'm suspicious neither DHCP or DNS are working. My router is pointing to my HDA for it's dns, but my hda's address isn't working. I can go to it by IP, but the actual "transmission.sr66.com" isn't working at all.

Also...static routes aren't working. My router is NOT acting as DHCP server, and it has DHCP disabled. I think the HDA is acting as the DHCP server, but static routes are not working.

I used to remember, in the HDA dashboard -> settings -> servers it listed DNS and DHCP servers...it lists neither.

Is there a way to test both?

Have you tried the Network Troubleshooter in the wiki?
It should help identify where the problem is.

Did you set up the static routes from the control panel?

DHCP isn't installed on my HDA. It's not in the list of servers, not even disabled. I didn't deviate at ALL from the installation instructions, and this is my third setup of the HDA (I ended up just re-installing fresh.) WTF, how to I install/enable/start it?

Open up a terminal on your hda and type:
ps -e|grep dhcp

Show us the result.

Try this: http://net.pommepause.com/network_troubleshooter/ and let us know what you find.

That's strange. There must be something wrong with the configuration somewhere.

Display the contents of /etc/dhcp/dhcpd.conf:

sudo cat sudo cat /etc/dhcp/dhcpd.conf

Well, your file is identical to mine except for the 43 host records at the bottom.

Did you add all of those? Are they hostnames for other network devices on your system?

I don't know what all of that is about.

Those are static IP's set through the Amahi interface, Setup -> Networking -> Static IP's -> New Static IP. I had those all set up on my previous install as well.

Next step?

Ok, have you checked for dhcp errors in your error logs?

This:
dmesg|grep dhcp

And this:
grep dhcp /var/log/messages
