Home server - New to Amahi - A couple questions

Hey guys,

New to this forum, but no where near new to forums in general.
I've been trying to find a home server for quite some time now, as I have plenty of older rigs from previous builds that do nothing but sit around. I have tons of multimedia data that I need on a basic central "hub" where I can access it from any of my three PCs and two Macs.

I just finished the install and got everything running; didn't have any issues installing whatsoever. I am going to be testing the waters of this, then adding more hard drives if I like the feel of it (specifically 8 2TB drives).

My questions:
1) How to I add files to the directories of Amahi? How do I then access the files from another computer?
1a) How quick will the access to the files be? Quick? Or slow?
2) Is it difficult to add drives in the future?
3) How come every time I add an app to the dashboard I end up at a broken link and not to the actual app?
4) Any good apps to make backups of my Windows based machines?

That's all for now. I really need to figure out how to add files to the directories so I can test this out.

Thanks
-Benny

I have figured out how to add files by going to the directory on the hard disk (/var/hda/files/xxx). I then added some files to it for testing purposes (a whole GB of important information).

-I have no clue how to access the data from another computer. How would I go about grabbing that folder and putting it on, say, this Windows PC I am using?
-How would I add data from another computer to the Amahi server directories?

That's all for now. Thanks for all your help.

1) How to I add files to the directories of Amahi? How do I then access the files from another computer?
Depends on the client OS. For Windows, you can enter \\hda in the run as box to access shares.
1a) How quick will the access to the files be? Quick? Or slow?
That is entirely dependent on the speed of your network.
2) Is it difficult to add drives in the future?
See the wiki for guidance. http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Adding_ ... o_your_HDA
3) How come every time I add an app to the dashboard I end up at a broken link and not to the actual app?
Need details here. You may have to check the log files on the HDA to figure out what went wrong.
4) Any good apps to make backups of my Windows based machines?
Your best bet here is to use Clonezilla Live CD. The wiki has guidance on how to backup to the HDA. http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Clonezilla

Best thing to do is play around with things. There is a lot of guidance in the wiki on how to do certain things. Most are written for someone with no linux experience.

Thank you for the reply.

I actually figured out how to connect on my Mac and PCs. It allows me to transfer files back and forth and is outstandingly quick!

Loving this so far. Much better than WHS...
