DCHP/DNS Problems?

Postby dylanpoulson » Sat Sep 10, 2011 8:02 am

I'm new to linux and Amahi, switched from a WHS box to Amahi.

So hello everyone.
I seem to be having a unique problem here with my server. I use multiple G routers and everything going to the main router - Linksys Dual band N. It does double duty as a router and a modem for my internet (need to enter in host name, and it recieves the IP/DNS addresses from my ISP) Using my ISP's DNS or OpenDNS and the routers DCHP server everything seems to run fine. I start up my server and all the computers and devices on the network (3 desktops, 1 iMac, 2 MacBooks a wii 360 and multiple smartphones) transfer over to the home.com domain and the internet is noticeably slower than before but its not really a problem. That was last night.

This morning none of my wired or wireless devices would connect (properly) and couldn't get onto the internet, the server box got the internet just fine. I have it set up so the server is wired right beside the main router, other 3 wired ports are being used as well. Once I turn off the server and turn the DCHP server on the router back on everything works just like normal with the internet at normal speeds.

Help?

I'm not clear on your network topology. Your router is hard-wired to your ISP (DSL or whatever)?
And your hda is hardwired to the router? (You don't want the hda running off wireless.)

Have you configured each client to get their DNS from the hda IP address?

I recommend running the Network Troubleshooter on the wiki: http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Network_troubleshooting

Post your results.

The network troubleshooter came up with everything working correctly.

My network setup consists like this
Internet
|
Main Linksys Router (WRT-400N) - N wifi connection to Xbox, all 3 desktops and the iMac.
|
2 G WIFI routers (Dlink) - connected to all Macbooks, wii and the smartphones.

The server connects wired to the main Linksys router.
The Linksys gets the IP, DNS server from my ISP and it also lets them see who I am through the host name.

Do you have DHCP enabled in your hda and disabled in the router?

And are all of your clients setup to get DNS from the hda?

The router has DCHP and DNS disabled, and all the clients have a HDA DNS address along with the domain.

It works very well at first but then slows right now to a crawl.

Wow, you've got me stumped.

What exactly is slowing down? How do you measure that?

Is it transfers between pcs on your network? Or is it Internet transfer speed?

Could it be your ISP that is slowing down?
