You can go through a VPN
http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/VPN and specific people to access to share . I do this with family, work great

Thanks for the openvpn suggestion. Can openvpn work without a client program? Im in the process of looking but not really getting anywhere.

try open vpn als (aka adito)
it is a clientless vpn.
