This is not meant as a complaint it's a genuine question. I don't know a lot about networking so I'm trying to understand why I would want Amahi to handle DHCP instead of my router. Could someone break that down a little bit for me? Also, does this just make my router, essentially, a switch?

Are there any issues that I may run into with something like that? My current setup is a DLink Gigabit Router (I believe it's a DGL 4100) a DLink Gigabit switch and a DLink (D-Link DIR-615) wireless N router (it just worked out with deals that they're all the same brand by the way). The Wireless router is essentially just an access point as dhcp is already turned off on that. There are three PCs on the network a couple laptops that will access the wireless, an HD Homerun, a blu ray player and a couple XBox360s that are using the network too.

Having the HDA serve DHCP/DNS is crucial to getting the max benefit from Amahi. If you turn off DHCP on the router, it will give the HDA control. If you do not, you will have difficulty accessing apps and some other features.

The router will route one IP to the HDA, then it will be the hub between your clients and internet. It is not that complicated, but some make it such.

I saw the information on FAQ. I guess I just don't know enough about the networking side of things to understand if those features are things that I will take advantage of or not and/or what effect that will have on the other machines on my network. I'm particularly concerned with how that effects things like the HD Homerun, a network attached TV tuner, that are not PCs but that the PCs on the network still need to find for them to function properly.

Understand. If all they need is connectivity, i.e. get a a DHCP lease, then using the HDA as the DHCP/DNS server will be fine. If they need something else, post it here and we can try to assist.

I presume it will act just like a regular client (PC), so no worries as Amahi will give it the IP it needs.
