SMART HD monitoring? [SOLVED]

Postby kikkegek » Tue Aug 02, 2011 2:15 pm

hi guys,

just love my Amahi server now up and running for two days now.

I was wondering: MS was giving me all kinds of SMART errors all the time. So I would like to know how can I check or monitor the health of my system? and especially the harddrives?

The Disk Utility under System Tools will display Smart data (on the Fedora desktop). Take a look.

I think it is part of the standard installation.

I found this:
http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Disk_Error_Alerts

I'll check that out when I have the time for it

That guidance will keep you informed of the drive status. I use it and receive emails when there are issues. Most of the time its a warning about temp or minor problems. It does work well.

smartctl -a /dev/<yourdrive>

gives you a full report

smartctl -t short /dev/<yourdrive> for a short 2 or 4 minute test, "long" for a long 30 minute test IIRC.
echo '16i[q]sa[ln0=aln100%Pln100/snlbx]sbA0D2173656C7572206968616D41snlbxq' | dc

thanks, I'll do that today.

WHS was giving me all kinds of errors of failing disks all the time...thats one of the reasons I switched to Amahi...but the foremoest reason is the awesome support on this forum....thanks...

I'll check the sentmail logs why the reports dont get sent out every day...

To view the test results you will need to issue
smartctl -a /dev/<yourdrive>
Amahi 6.1 x86_64 ExpressCD - Intel D510MO, 2GB, Promise TX300
1x 500GB 2.5" WD Black (OS and LZ). Pool: 1x 1.5TB Samsung F2, 1x 1.5TB Samsung F3, 1x 2TB Samsung F4EG
Apps: uShare, uTorrent, Amahi Energy Saver

okay, I did that and here is the file:
smartctl_log.txt
(4.56 KiB) Downloaded 166 times
can you tell me if this is good or bad?

WHS was killing me with disk errors all the time, so I am really curious if the disc is OK or not.

and my file transfers over GB network are only U: 3-4MB/sec and D: 10-12 MB/sec

so I wanna be sure its not the disc
