Using Amahi DHCP with server w/o WLAN

Postby DerJonne » Tue May 24, 2011 5:05 am

Hello everyone!

This might be a n00b question but ill let you be the judge of that.

Im looking forward to build a Amahi Home Server network at home and currently my setup is as follows:

- Vodafone EasyBox 803 Modem
- Old ShuttlePC with Athlon 2,6Ghz, 1GB Ram + HDD´s.
- Few Laptops that connect via WLAN

My question is, when the Modem is 192.168.2.1 and the only device that is connected to it (the modem) via Ethernet-cable is the Amahi-server, can I shutdown the Modems DHCP and use the one in Amahi instead?
My AmahiServer has no WLAN-adapter and all my laptops connect via Wlan.

TL;DR
Is it possible to connect to the Amahi Server to get the DHCP IP-address with Wlan when the Server has no Wlan adapter?
All my devices are in the same 192.168.2.* Gateway

If your modem functions as a router, then Yes, use Amahi for your DHCP server. Amahi does not replace your router/modem, so no need for WLAN adapter on the box. Your wireless connections will still run through the router, however the DHCP address will be assigned by Amahi.

If your modem does not, then you need a router to use Amahi.

Hope that helps clarify things.

Thanks!

That clarifies everything :)

In other words, the laptops (and cellphones etc) connect to the Modem/Router EasyBox BUT their IP address is assigned by the Amahi DHCP Server?

Great!

Thanks for the quick reply!
