My Amahi box is running wicked slow

Is a Pentium 4 3ghz with 512 mb of ram insufficient to run fedora 14/amahi well?
When I installed fedora and amahi, everything was copasetic. Today however doing everyday activities was very slow.
Then I added a PCI 4-port SATA card and four hard drives, turned them all into a storage pool. Didn't make things better or worse.
Now I'm copying files over my LAN and CPU utilization is over 75%, ram usage is about 33%. Network throughput isn't steady at all... it spikes to ~25 MB/s before it drops back down to zero for about 5 seconds, then it spikes to ~25 MB/s then tails off. Music files are approximately 4 MB. Sometime transfers were even slower... like 3MB/s. Both NIC's are GigE with a 5 port gigabit Netgear WAP/router in between them.
If it's too slow I'll deal. But if there's a solution I'd love that too.
thanks
