Hi folks

I'm a bit of a linux noob. I recently installed PinguyOS [ubuntu] in the hope of having a central server at home. I seemed to get on okay with it ie. set up shares and had ps3mediaserver running. 2 weeks later I heard about Amahi and from the website, and the features really appealed to me.

I followed the fedora 14 install and the amahi setup instructions fairly well and have had it running for the past week.
The thing that bugs me a bit [i'm hoping it's just me making schoolboy errors] is that i can't seem to implement the remote features of it.

I can access //hda at home all well and good [apart from some permission issues on subfolders created directly var/hda/files/###/] but what can i get out of Amahi when I'm not at home??
I've tried following instructions for Jinzora, i've set up the UDP port forward, and can make a connection but not sure where i go from there.
Should i be going to ####.yourhda.com remotely? And what should i be expecting to see??
I'd like to persevere with it, bit i'm in 2 minds whether to put Pinguy back on and wait until more progress is made on Amahi.
The concept is great, and judging by other people's comments i should be getting more out of it.

Am i doing something simple wrong? for example, i'm not sure what i'm meant to do to access my music [via jinzora] via vlc at work or on my htc phone. I'll probably post more specific questions in the relevant boards, but i just feel like i'm missing something obvious here.

Are you trying to access your network from outside using VPN or the user.yourhda.com?

To do it VPN, see the wiki page for clients here http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/VPN_clients. That's where \\hda comes into play.

To do it via user.yourhda.com, you can access a web app, but not the files using \\hda. There is an app called OpenVPN ALS that will give you access to file shares. It does not do it woth \\hda, but still offers a similar capability.

When 'in the network' at home, if i go to the url <user>.yourhda.com all i get is my ISP's router admin homepage. I can see why this happens as it is set to the gateway (as advised by the instructions). This happens on all devices even an iphone.
If i go to the server ip address, then it just takes me to the login for the amahi dashboard.

I have HDA Connect 3 installed on my work win7 laptop, i will try this again later outside of my home network.
If/when it connects via vpn, i'm still confused as to what i need to do next... do i just browse to \\hda in the file explorer? Surely it can't be that easy can it?

The behavior you describe is most likely due to being on your own network when using HDAConnect. When you do use it from a location outside your network, you will see the same behavior as if you were connected inside the network.

What I mean is \\hda will bring up the file shares when you are remote, same as if you were accessing it from home. Most all functionality will work the same for other features.

HDAConnect is a great VPN client and I have used it many times when away from home. Hope this helps clarify your concerns.

I'm currently outside my network and have run HDAConnect in windows7, the icon is green and is connected homehda.com. The assigned IP address is 10.8.0.6

I tried browsing to \\hda, but eventually get a 'network path not found'. So i tried pinging my hda server, but this just times out too.

I'm not sure what HDAconnect is connecting to but if i can't even ping my server's external ip, it makes me think it could be down to the port forwarding not working properly...?

I've looked at the log file for hdaconnect but can't see anything that stands out as a problem, although i'm not sure what i should be looking for...

Did you check in the VPN checker in your control panel in amahi.org?

I'm just trying to switch the port forward to 443 tcp as described in the instructions.
I've done this on the router, but i'm unable to edit the amahi.conf file.

Sorry this seems a real linux noob question but i don't know how to elevate to root when dragging a file[the amended one] to openvpn folder

why do 443?
(if you think it may be allowed, it may only be the case that TCP is allowed and generally the VPN goes over UDP)

with 1194 ... when you connect from outside, does anything get logged in /var/log/messages ?

if so, the forwarding (in 1194!! not 443) is working ok.

re the port 443, it said it somewhere on one of the VPN troubleshooting pages....

i looked in the log file at the time of connection last night, the only things that stand out are:

TLS Auth Error: Auth Username/Password verification failed for peer
and
SENT CONTROL [client-tcheng]: 'AUTH_FAILED' (status=1)



I really feel that it's probably a minor thing that is stopping me connecting, maybe the log file might point to the problem.
Is there any one i could send it to glance over, as opposed to copy/pasting it in to one of my posts??
