Unable to access shares from windows xp sp3

Postby Goldstrom » Fri Dec 03, 2010 12:16 am

Hi,
I can access shares from a macbook, but not from my windows xp laptop. Both are connected through the same wireless network. I've followed the shares troubleshooting guide on the wiki, including renaming my workgroup on both the laptop and the server, trying different configurations of names and ways of describing my HDA and looked through the forums. It does appear on My Network Places but can't see folders.
My system is DD-WRT with DHCP disabled and I also haven't been able to get VPN to work :o(. A bit frustrating but I'm willing to learn and work at it.
Any ideas?
Thanks in advance,
David

Hi David

Have you checked to see if simple file sharing is switched off

1. Click Start | My Computer | Tools | Folder Options | View.
2. Scroll to the bottom of the list of advanced settings and un-check Use Simple File Sharing (Recommended).
3. Click OK.

For the VPN i am also using DD-WRT and have no problems using the openvpn feature of Amahi. I can use windows clients (XP Pro and Win7) alsong with linux machines and Android phones.

Have you setup port forwarding on your DD-WRT router for VPN?

Thanks; I think that helped, though I approached it slightly differently and turned off all file sharing. Now, even though I can't seem to map a network drive, I can type \\hda and get a login window and access the shares through explorer.

I'm not sure what I did to get vpn working, but it is also up. I did reflash and go through all the settings on my Linksys running dd-wrt. I think that I may have had a setting un-checked on the VPN settings in the router; now they're all checked and it's working!

Very exciting to have a home server. Thanks again for the help.
Regards,
David
