Using Amahi like a private "cloud"

I'm curious if someone can point me in the general direction, or let me know if I'm ahead of the game (or where I could help pitch in). I'm looking for something to use Amahi kind of like a private cloud; I was looking to be able to upload/copy files on my Amahi server from anywhere. Accessing the HDA apps would be nice, too ... but the main issue I'm finding is the built-in VPN requires both a client and specified ports (which I'm finding are blocked when sitting behind a proxy).
I'm not sure where I should start poking around. If there's a way to work with proxy servers, that'd be nice. I noted the SSL VPN ... but have to admit I'm not particularly familiar with it (maybe I just need to spend more time with it?). On the one hand I'd like to open up access so people (family) could access my HDA from any machine, but I'm also conscious of leaving it open on the public internet.
Is there a balance to be made, or can someone point me in the right direction for the tools I'm looking for? I did get the regular VPN working with Amahi ... and it works fine when I'm on a wide-open internet line and am running the VPN. I was hoping for something a bit less intrusive, as I really didn't want to ask people in the family to connect to a VPN every time they want to copy/upload photos.
