Understanding LVM...

So I've been using linux (mostly Ubuntu) for about 5 years full time, but I'm a Fedora n00b. When I set it up, I didn't even think about what lvm was, but I guess I enabled it. Problem is, I set the system up, then added 3 HDD's (after install; they weren't there when I installed fedora) and LVM took them over and made them a big drive. All 3 had data on them, and it appears LVM has cannibalized them and wiped them into a volume group.

Is there any way from a running Amahi system to completely disable lvm, keep the data I have (recover what appears to be lost, when I removed those physical drives from lbm they show up as unformatted uninitialized drives, though they retain my original volume labels, and I can't mount them) and just have it like it is in ubuntu with 4 physical drives showing up under /media/?

We do not recommend LVM precisely because of this.

Can you try an LVM tutorial and see how it works?

or ... stick an external drive and copy the files there. reinstall, then move the files into the new setup.

Is it not enabled by default? If so then why?
