What exactly should I be able to see when I go to: username.yourhda.com from a remote computer? Right now I still have my default Amahi setup... shouldn't I be able to see something at (http:\<username>.yourhda.com) or (http:\www.<username>.yourhda.com)

Do I need to install a VPN client to see it? Assuming it's supposed to be working, what more would I get with VPN? After reading the "hosting a website" section, it sounds like I need to do that to see apps from the outside world, or should (http:\<username>.yourhda.com) work and hosting simply provide direct access without the HDA console?

Thanks again,
Andre

What you will see will very much depend on your setup. Assuming you've got an ADSL connection, the username.yourhda.com will resolve to the IP address of your ADSL modem. Depending how you've got this configured, you may get to see the authentication page for the modem or if you have got port forwarding to a PC, you may get a web server.

To interact with your home network, you should look at using the HDA connect VPN client (make sure you use port forwarding on your modem / router). Then you'll be able to connect to the shares, access the web server, etc. This is explained in the wiki in detail.

nicely put.

yes, VPN is the safe way to get you back to your home network. and that is what the yourhda.com nickname is used for.

however, you can use it for other things. like ssh access or hosting multiple apps in your system for external consumption.

however, these are things that are somewhat technically advanced. we'd like to make them easier going forward, though.
