Well it does not look like it's mounted to me. There would be files there, correct?

There should be an entry in /etc/fstab to mount this drive permanently or on reboot it will disappear. The wiki guidance for adding a drive will help with that using hda-diskmount if needed.

Did you also create a share pointing to that drive path? I saw something about that in the referenced post.

Thanks. I did. At least I believe that every time I copy something into the movie shares (via Finder on my mac), for use with my DLNA app, I am copying the files there. I know for a fact that I had been doing that but as of now I'm not so sure.

So is this resolved or do you still need assistance?

I looked at fstab. I don't recall doing anything with this file in the past and I can't decipher what's there in terms of letting it know to reboot drive. Now it makes sense. When I rebooted after difficulties, that would mean it didn't remount (?) the drive. Is that the case based on what can be seen (or is absent) from fstab? (The only file I do remember modifying was the DNLA config file, pursuant to the wiki, to list all directories it should point to.)

Yep it's not in /etc/fstab. So you would need to remount it and then add to /etc/fstab based on wiki guidance.

Well, I've tried to remount and I could not do it. I tried the same commands I used (posted in a separate earlier forum post), when I first formatted and installed this drive.

As an alternative, I just bought a 2Tb Toshiba USB drive and plugged it in (a laptop serves as my server), and the HDA picked it up in the Disks / Devices list immediately.

The link I used is the following and will be using this with new Toshiba drive:

https://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Adding ... o_your_HDA

As I said, about a year ago I went thru the process of installing a "second drive" with some difficulty (following the wiki) and am thinking about going thru it again (by referring to the old forum post and the wiki I used then), but a couple of questions in view of recent forum posts on this topic

1) Are my options for using as much of the disk space on this new drive different now that this is a first-time install of this drive versus trying to re-partitition an already-installed drive ?? I don't want to proceed and find out later I could've availed myself of an easier route.

2) My goal is to install yet another drive which will serve as a back up. Is that a standard route or approach? (I don't have greyhole or anything running. FYI, A while back I purchased amahi time machine and installed it, but have not been able to get that image to copy over.)

Question 2 is intended as a more open-ended question at this point about the various easy options are.

Thanks again in my attempt to gradually but finally iron out these long-standing space, partitioning, and back up issues.

[EDIT - PS - In view of the fact that I believe in the power of good archiving practices, I am willing to update the wiki with my experiences, as i did in the case of DLNA Rokhu update I did a while back. Given that I have a long term commitment to my server (given my growing mediawiki), I know I benefit as much as anyone from good documentation. After all, a particular issue or topic will, particularly over time, will arise again, and it's easier the second time around if good documentation was archived the first time.]

Ok let me see if I can help here. Did you see the how to use USB disks guidance in the wiki? Not sure if it will help, but thought I would mention it.

If the drive is already partitioned, there should be no need to redo that part. It would be mounted like a drive with existing data.
2) My goal is to install yet another drive which will serve as a back up. Is that a standard route or approach? (I don't have greyhole or anything running. FYI, A while back I purchased amahi time machine and installed it, but have not been able to get that image to copy over.)
Many users use additional drives for backup. Some use Cloud services as well.

Hope this helps. BTW, can we please start a new thread for future issues? It's best to keep a topic for a single issue. Makes searching easier for future use.

Yes, to starting new threads in future, but this a long-standing issue for me.

I think you had mentioned this link before regarding my options in installing drive. True, It's a USB drive, but I successfully used the adding a second drive wiki in the past which was simpler for me to follow and worked. Appreciate any definitive guidance regarding which wiki is better for what is a straight forward issue.

A year ago, when I followed the install a second drive wiki, I took the option to reformat the drive in order to use a format that if I recall correctly the wiki mentioned was a more efficient format for linux (not necessary), etc. Should I ignore that part, this time around.

How do I discover the partitioning of an unmounted drive ?

Thanks
