The port 1194 forwarding works for VPN, but not the OpenVPN ALS app. For that you need to forward port 4443 internal and 443 internal to your HDA IP.
If you have success with your setup, it might be worth posting some information in the wiki for your particular modem/router. I am sure someone else will have the same problem some day.

Re: Will Amahi do what I need?
Hi
I am totally confused now
On my Amahi control panel it says Open VPN Tester and it looks at port 1194.
Do I not need to use that then?
How do I set the .yourhda.com Dynamic DNS that has been assigned to me if I am using the ALS OpenVPN.
I think I am not understanding exactly how this all ties together.

Re: Will Amahi do what I need?
Port 1149 is for OpenVPN. To use that you would install a VPN client, such as HDAConnect for Windows and a similar OpenVPN compatible app.
OpenVPN ALS app is totally different. It runs on port 4443, which is web based and not OpenVPN. To use it outside the network, you need to forward port 4443 to your HDA IP, then you can use username.yourhda.com.
You can find additional guidance about accessing apps outside your network int he wiki.

Do not confuse VPN with web apps. Completely different ports.

Re: Will Amahi do what I need?
Hi
Still baffled........
I tried to port forward 4443 and for a moment I thought I had done it as the port open test was successful.
Then I realised that I had not chosen the correct option from Any, UDP or TCP
I understand I have to select UDP, if I do the port test times out.
If I select Any the port is open.
What is the difference? If the port test should say open when the setting is UDP then I am back to router issues again.
If I do get the forwarding to work at some point how do I point the port to the yourhda.com as advised.
Hell this is hard to understand

Re: Will Amahi do what I need?
When you forward ports for the web apps, it is always TCP. Only UDP port forwarding is for VPN and VNC if used primarily.
Since you are using OpenVPN ALS and if you router allows, forward port 4443 internal, 443 external to HDA IP. Some routers call it Virtual Hosts instead of port forwarding. You should be able to find guidance for your router on the internet if you do not have a user manual.
Networking can be complicated, especially if you are not experienced with it. We have tried to make it as simple as possible.

Re: Will Amahi do what I need?
Oh dear, not one bit of that made any sense to me
So do I pick Any, UDP or TCP?
I have port forwarding on the router, the only mention of VPN is this option;
VPN
Your BT Home Hub has been designed to work with most virtual private network (VPN) software. If you’re having problems connecting, please try enabling port clamping by clicking the ‘Yes’ button to see if this fixes your problem.
Port clamping enable: Option Yes for enable port clamping is unselectedYesOption No for enable port clamping is selectedNo
Port clamping sets the Internet key exchange to UDP port 500, rather than allowing a floating port.
This is sometimes required by older virtual private network (VPN) Clients.
How do I determine the difference between an internal and external port forwarding, how do I chose them?
Where does 443 come into this????

Re: Will Amahi do what I need?
And when you say web app that means the Openvpn als program?
Re: Will Amahi do what I need?
OpenVPN ALS is a web app, not VPN in the sense as your router would think. As I mentioned in the previous post, choose TCP not UDP.
You may need to do some googling for your router to get this set up correctly. Unless there is someone else here who has the same one, hard to explain without seeing the options.
I am sorry if this confuses you. It helps to have some understanding of how networking and your router works. Without that, you are going to spin in circles. Recommend you come by the IRC for some live help.

Re: Will Amahi do what I need?
Thanks??? Sorry I don't know your name. Thanks for the help.
I am spending as much time as possible reading about all these things, youtube research everything I can find.
Really I need someone to sit down with me with a piece of paper and show me but I will get there.
I won't be beaten on this one, just won't get it until that little light clicks on in my brain.
Perhaps there is a networking and Linux book for complete idiots???????
I am sure that part of the issues are the BT Home Hub 3.0 type A router.
There are many complaints of port forwardring not working at the BT forums.
BT are sending my a type B router but I think I will have to buy a new one that will actually do the job.
All this just to let my TV Engineers forum members download the files I have for them
I promise to keep updating this thread as it may help someone else in the future.
Next step is get a router that works. And read as much as possible.
Thank you for your time. I appreciate that it must be frustrating for you to have to explain such basic things to people like me.
regards
Trevor
