opendns

Postby lip » Tue Mar 31, 2009 2:54 pm

Hi guys,
I've searched and it seems others have had this problem...
Just wondering if there is a quick fix.

This is the situation:
- I've installed Amahi twice and it happens each time
- Install Amahi...goes ok
- DHCP set to off on router
- Laptops see the hda home after installation(as well as the installed computer of course)
- shares work perfectly
- reboot laptops. one of them still works enough to get to the hda home but not the other laptops. The other laptop goes to "openDNS"
- shares work ok on all still

Any idea how to fix this?

Thanks.

as you point out, this happens (rarely, but it does). (btw, i realize reinstalling can be quicker than seeking help, but reinstalling should be the last option :) )

we'd like to debug it in a system where it helps, so if you have time to help, please stop by the irc channel.

if you could do this (as root) and share it with the team it would also help in any case. if you feel there may be some sensitive info in the /etc/ files, please remove it first, obviously.

Code: Select all

cp -a /etc /tmp/ && cd /tmp && tar -czf my-etc.tar.gz etc
then share my-etc.tar.gz by email (support at this domain).
- reboot laptops. one of them still works enough to get to the hda home but not the other laptops. The other laptop goes to "openDNS"
other ideas:
  • are the laptops "corporate-ized?" - some corporate IT guys "fix" their DNS and to work more reliably on the company and break general DNS
  • are all the laptops having issues windows vista perhaps? if so try vista networking issue, which, of course, we'd like to solve on our end for all stock vista systems .... (ideas? any networking guru out there?)
  • try (in the hda) hdactl-hup - this will restart the networking services, however, this is like rebooting, so it may not help
  • try this simple networking troubleshooting guide

Hi,
The link:
http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Vista_Networking_Issue

seems to have fixed it.
The laptop that causes me the most problems is a corporate laptop(a little nervous about changing this as our IT is run through our headquarters in Germany)...I will not normally use this laptop with amahi but I wanted to fix this.
The home laptop still gives me grief but I will see if this is causing this as well.
I'll report back if there are still issues.

Guys, great support.

Yes, we find that some corporate departments are a bit over the top w.r.t. DNS.

I would not blame them. it just solves headaches for them in terms of vista and xp support. it just bends the whole idea of an open, self-managed network.

The other thing we find is that the more advanced the user (of Amahi), the more complications arise. More expert users cut corners all and try to be more in control, not following the instructions many times, leading to unexpected situations and network failures. We adapt to this as we improve things, so feedback (actionable, if possible) is critical to improve Amahi.

For the "home laptop" did you follow the network troubleshooting guide?

they probably prefer their dns b/c it allows them to easily filter known bad (or just unwanted) sites.
