Hey everyone,
Great product here. Just installed Amahi with F12 last night, and so far, I like. I'm not that new to Linux, but I am new to Amahi, so I thought I'd post here. I've attached a pic of my home network, with hopefully some relevant information.
I do have one question. My domain is "the-simpsons.com" with planned names such as homer, marge, etc. Should my windows machines be using domain or workgroup. I believe the default workgroup is "home" for sharing. Should I be using the samba workgroup "home" for sharing files? I assume that means that the domain naming system is just for reference to each computer, correct?
Also, any tips I should know about that aren't in the wiki?
My computers are all various OS's, which is kind of nice. I'll be using XBMC as a front end for playing media.
I'm sure I'll be posting more and more.
Thanks for all your help!

Can you expand your question a little more? A domain is the network name (or alias you are using). The work group is the peer to peer functionality of your systems if they were not on a domain network (in your case the-simpsons.com). What is the issue that you are having?I do have one question. Re: New to Amahi, looking for tips and or guidance
Thanks for the help. I was wondering if a workgroup was necessary for sharing files.
Re: New to Amahi, looking for tips and or guidance
would i be right in assuming that you are talking about the selection in the windows network config ie select workgroup or domain?
if so, then unless you are using a domain controller eg windows servers or the hda as a pdc (primary domain controller), then you should stay with workgroup. so yes, put all you pc's into the simpsons workgroup and the world is your oyster.
you'll be a little stuck with your naming convention if you expand and they don't have any more kids though!

Re: New to Amahi, looking for tips and or guidance
You are correct in assuming that, thanks for the response. I actually put all the machines in the "home" workgroup that the hda created. I adjusted the smb.conf files on the other linux machines and just used the home workgroup for the windows machines.
No problems!
Thanks for mentioning the PDC. I could use the hda as a PDC if I remember correctly. If I do, then is the workgroup name irrelevant? Or would I have to edit the Samba configuration files to point to a domain group instead of a workgroup?
Sorry for all the networking questions. I'm pretty good with all other aspects, and with raw IP's , but not with domains (as I've never administered one!)
Also, I think I read somewhere that there is a tweak to the samba config file to improve performance? Is that the case or am I dreaming?

Re: New to Amahi, looking for tips and or guidance
you could use it as a PDC but you will need pro or business versions of windows etc to work with it.
in amahi, you just tuen on the advanced tab and under shares you can switch to PDC.
amahi will configure the samba.conf for you.
the samba tweak you are on about is already configured in amahi.

^^^ Thanks.
I've got server up and running, shares are being seen just fine. Put all my data on it.
My next bump - Fedora is trying apply 312 updates but when I say go ahead, it always seem s to get stumped. Is this an issue? I couldn't find a thread about it.
I'll start posting in the other forums now, I appreciate the help the community gives me.

you can try running the following commands:
and see if that works. the first command clears the local cache, the update will recreate it.
Code: Select all
yum clean all
yum update
echo '16i[q]sa[ln0=aln100%Pln100/snlbx]sbA0D2173656C7572206968616D41snlbxq' | dc

Re: New to Amahi, looking for tips and or guidance
^^^ Great, thanks for the help. I'll try that later tonight. So far things are running pretty smoothly. I have the occasional hiccup regarding internet connectivity, but if I restart the DNS and DHCP server, I'm good to go.
