Internet connection fails after amahi install

Postby flem0114 » Sat Oct 10, 2009 8:36 pm

I have an Airport Extreme Base Station as my router. I cannot get it to play nice with my brand new Amahi HDA. Once I install my HDA, the internet no longer works. I can't reinstall because the internet doesn't work. Before I can work on figuring out my router problems, I have to get my internet working again. I know nothing about Linux so I have no idea where to begin. Please help me uninstall Amahi, or do whatever it takes to get the internet back again! Thanks so much!

Please describe your situation a little more clearly.
Do you only have one machine (your HDA) on your network?

Also -- please review this http://wiki.amahi.org/index.php/Network_Troubleshooting for network troubleshooting.

Here is my setup...

I have Direct TV DSL hard wired into my apartment building. From the wall I have my ethernet cord plugged into my apple airport extreme router. From there I have it wired to my hda system. After I installed fedora 10 (reinstalled it fresh today) I had internet. I proceeded to install amahi per the instructions on amahi.org. I made sure to use the IP address of my airport extreme router (192.168.196.8). After install and reboot, my hda no longer has internet access. I have followed the troubleshooting guide in the link you sent me. I was able to successfully ping my hda and router but I got no response on step 3.

My ultimate goal is to set my amahi server up as a media/print server that will also provide wireless backups for the two laptops in my house (a mac osx snow leopard and a windows 7 pc.) I want it to eventually run headless and want to take full advantage of the features amahi has to offer!

The internet is working just fine on my mac and pc so I know the router is working fine. The troubleshooting guide suggest adjusting my settings. I am extremely new to linux (and have very limited networking knowledge) and have no idea what settings to adjust or how to adjust them.

Attached is my routers settings
My HDA settings are as follows:
MY DNS Hostname is "localhost.localdomain"
My Primary DNS is "192.168.169.10"
No secondary or tertiary DNS
My DNS search path is "Apt-300"

My eth0 settings are as follows:
The "Statically set IP addresses is checked"
Address is "192.168.169.10"
Subnet mask is "255.255.255.0"
Default gateway address is "192.168.169.8"

If you can help I would be so appreciative. I feel I'm a fairly techy guy and have never gotten a chance to use linux. I really want to learn and make a successful linux server that takes advantage of all the great things Amahi has. Thank you for taking the time to help!

I am not a networking expert, but I am making an intelligent guess when I say the subnet mask on your HDA settings should be the same as is currently on your Airport (ie. 255.255.248.0)

You might want to confirm this since I think you will have to configure a new HDA at amahi.org and then reinstall Amahi.

Note: Internet works fine on your Mac and PC since they are still using the router for DHCP.

I'm trying to change the subnet mask on my hda but am having no luck. When the HDA boots up, I go to "System" - "Administration" - "Network" and then edit my eth0 connection. I change my subnet mask from 255.255.255.0 to 255.255.248.0 and hit ok. I save my changes and then go edit my eth0 connection again to double check it worked. Now my subnet mask reads, 192.168.169.8. I have no idea why! When I reboot my computer, the subnet mask goes back to 255.255.255.0. Is there a way to change this is terminal? If so, how?

The subnet mask is "controlled" by the Amahi installation.
If modified it gets reset by Amahi to the values set in your control panel at Amahi.org
I think you have to configure a new HDA at amahi.org and reinstall Amahi.

What can I do to get my internet working again so that I can reinstall amahi?

You need to get your HDA to get it's IP lease from your router.
I am not exactly sure ow to do this - if you follow http://forums.amahi.org/viewtopic.php?f=8&t=280 that may give you some hints.

Even if I do figure out how to do a reinstall (I might just reinstall fedora...) how can configure amahi on the front end to work properly after install. I placed 192.168.169.8 as the IP address. Is this correct? It doesn't appear there are any other options for configuring amahi at install. At least, I haven't seen anything...

the subnet mask is not configurable by hand, unfortunately, so re-installing will probably not help.

i will re-read the thread and see if i can think of what's going on.
