So. In the interests of moving forward.
I decided to start over with a new install code, new HDA IP and new home domain.
Everything has been installed strictly by the book - minimal Fedora install, using HDA for DNS and HDA for DHCP.
I have changed WORKGROUP name to the one I use under Shares>Settings, I have entered Fixed IPs for my devices and I have changed the default Dynamic IP Range under Network>Settings from 100-254 to 101-254 - just to make sure there is no clash with the HDA's IP 192.168.1.100. All the fixed IPs are <100.
Several reboots later I have complete connectivity. I used the interactive troubleshooter to check and it all works perfectly.
BUT I still have two problems.
1. I can install apps from available apps and the links on the dashboard work as they are supposed to, launching the apps - but when I try to log into the apps authentications fails. I have tried creating a new user but authentication still fails.
2. Shares are browseable over the LAN, but once again I can't access or write to them. I have tried using Dolphin and Thunar to access them from my Kubuntu box but I get the authentication dialogue wanting a username user and password - neither of which work.
The common element here seems to be authentication - perhaps it's an underlying Fedora problem?
Thanks for your continuing time and support.
SOLVED: Why is sharing so hard when it's supposed to work out of the box?
Re: Why is sharing so hard when it's supposed to work out of the box?
Are you using the credentials provided for the apps? It's not your Amahi credentials. Most apps use admin/admin.but when I try to log into the apps authentications fails. I have tried creating a new user but authentication still fails.
This is likely an issue with your Linux client. No one else has complained about issues with the shares. I would think if this was an issue, we would have a lot of support issues.hares are browseable over the LAN, but once again I can't access or write to them.
Did you check out the wiki guidance for accessing shares? There may be something with a firewall or the access is not correctly set up with the client machine.

Re: Why is sharing so hard when it's supposed to work out of the box?
Thanks again for your help.
My apologies. It would seem that you are right.
Apps are now working with the correct password, although Caliber appears to be have gone into beta phase since I first installed it and is no longer available.
More importantly I have been able to copy stuff to one of the shares from a Windows machine, so my one remaining problem seems to be as you say with Kubuntu.

Yes we found out that it's broken and needs some serious work. It's on my to do list.Caliber appears to be have gone into beta phase since I first installed it and is no longer available.
have you checked out the sharing to Linux wiki guidance? It might be helpful.so my one remaining problem seems to be as you say with Kubuntu.

Re: Why is sharing so hard when it's supposed to work out of the box?
Just to wrap this up.
I added a user in Fedora of the same name as the HDA user I was using for access then purged and reinstalled Samba on client machine which gave me access to HDA shares.
Then I added an external HDD to HDA which gave me further problems (nothing is straight forward).
I fixed this by:
1: Making the disk writeable
Command is sudo chmod 777 /media/disk (replace the /media/disk with the actual mount
point. In this case /var/hda/files/drives/drive1/name of share folder
2. I noticed with HDA shares that giving access to All Users does not enable Guest access. For this untick All Users then give access to Guest (don't know whether this is relevant but it can't hurt).
3. Click on Permissions under Share folder settings and click on the Spanner settings icon to purge permissions which turns Spanner into a Smiley Face.
4. Finally . . . Mount the new hard drive permanently by editing /etc/fstab as per instructions in the Amahi wiki

So it sounds like everything is good now.
If you think the steps you have taken to get the Linux client are not adequately outlined in the wiki, please feel free to update the page. The community would greatly appreciate it.
Will mark this thread as solved.
