How to access terminal?
How to access terminal?
Is there a way to access a terminal window from the console? I found the wiki section, which says to "access the HDA directly." Does that mean from a computer on my network? Or do I need to hook up a monitor and keyboard to the server? I have "advanced settings" checked, but can't find a terminal option anywhere. Thanks.
Re: How to access terminal?
There are several options here. You could install the Shell in a Box application which will provide terminal access from your web browser.
You can also follow the key-based SSH logins tutorial and use Putty. Many users follow this method when they don't have a keyboard and monitor hooked up to their HDA.
The open terminal as root may help as well.

I would also recommend Shell in a Box,works great.I've only used it on 7 though. Will try is out on 8 this weekend.
Server: AsRock N3700(4-core) mini-itx,8GB crucial RAM,Iocrest 8-port expansion card,450W corsair psu, x4 3TB WD green drives. All in a Sunbeam UFO case. (Amahi 8).
Re: How to access terminal?
Thank you for these suggestions. Shellinabox and Putty both allow me to open a terminal window, so I'm good. The source of my original confusion was in the third suggestion. Under my Apps tab, there is no "system" option. I have advanced settings checked. Is there anything else I'm missing?

Not sure what you are looking for here. Can you explain what you are trying to do?Under my Apps tab, there is no "system" option.

Re: How to access terminal?
The "Open Terminal as Root" Wiki page you linked to above says:
"Sometimes, you'll be asked to open a Terminal window, and become root.
To do that, on the HDA itself, go in the Applications menu, and select System > Terminal."
Maybe I'm looking at the wrong Applications menu, I don't know. Anyway, that's what prompted by original inquiry.

Re: How to access terminal?
Ah I see now. That is outdated info. That is if you are running a Desktop version for the HDA which is no longer supported. To do that, on the HDA itself, go in the Applications menu, and select System > Terminal."
Amahi 7 and 8 are headless so that won't work. Ignore that part and I will have to update the wiki.
